I should have read this three or four years when everyone was talking about it. Idk if it is all the hours I've spent loving environmental science and botany professors but I could listen to Hope Jahren talk all day long. This book was a near-perfect read for me - science, plants, a wry memoir style, the endless cycle of grants and funding for projects, motherhood, especially mothering a son. 3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this and give her tons of credit for having the ability to write like this while being a genius scientist. Some humor, emotion and truth about women in science. Also tons of scientific information on the alternating chapters. I learned a lot and basically take away that everything is more complicated than it appears.

I enjoyed how this story was told in both antidotes and case studies of the plants. I also liked that the author included her mental health history in the stories since it did play a role in her work.
