"Now a Major Motion Picture in 3-D: READ IT before you SEE IT!" is the advertisement stuck on the cover of the edition of Coraline I checked out from the library.
Um, thanks for the warning!
This has gotten mixed reviews by my Goodreads friends. I decided that the plot sounded intriguing enough. Creepy, yes, but I kind of like being creeped out a little by books sometimes. And it was so short ... sure; I'd give it a try. (Guess I am just as bad as Coraline, opening doors out of sheer curiosity des ...more

I really should have read this book before I watched the movie, but I always do things backwards from what would suit me best. In any case, there's often a line at the library when a movie-based-on-a-book comes out, and so I wait, and wait. And here I am, reading Coraline in April.
In any case, I thought the story was much better than the movie. Coraline is a little girl, newly transplanted to a spooky old house populated by exactly the sort of eccentric neighbors you might dream of - on the low ...more

Neil Gaiman's beloved tale of an eccentric girl named Coraline. When Coraline moves into a strange dilapidated mansion, she decides to go exploring. What she discovers is another world, designed to be a fantastical version of her own, with another mother who is determined to keep Coraline for her own. This was a wonderful, creepy story. I'd recommend it to kids and adults looking for a quick, fun read. The illustrations in the book were a perfect match for the mood of the story.
