I'm really glad that I took the time to reread this book. I found there was a lot that I didn't remember and a lot that I did, but that was interesting to read for a second time. This author has tackled a few incredibly difficult subjects- incest, inbreeding, and transgender, and turned them into an amazing novel that really makes you think about any prior prejudices you might have, no matter how unintentional. FABULOUS audiobook! The narrator is really, really good. I thought that the way the book is told lent itself particularly well to an audiobook.
The actual story was really intriguing. I enjoyed all the back story and I did feel that it helped me understand the main character's identity and identity struggle better. I would highly recommend this to anyone. ...more

What I liked about this book: at places, Cal's narration seemed very realistic, i.e. when he used film terminology. Everything after about page 350, when I stopped calculating how many pages I had to read a day to finish by book club meeting.

I decided not to read this book on page 22. It's not that the book isn't well written or even interesting. It's just not a topic I want to go into. It's about one of those people that are born as a girl, but they are really a boy in their DNA.
