A sweet, sentimental story about an orphan sent to college by a mysterious benefactor. On the one hand, our heroine seems very ahead of her time, being quite independent and almost fierce in her desire to be educated. She mentions her desire to win the right to vote (clearly a suffragette), she lauds the idea of all women being educated and "thinking". This was surprisingly fresh and modern, considering it was published in 1912! It was delightful seeing the world through Judy's eyes, and she often made me laugh out loud. Her musings are also chock full of quotable lines.
I didn't love the ending - there's definitely a problematic element from a modern point of view - but I can take it in the context of the time & place. Still, I prefer my headcanon, where (view spoiler) ...more
