**2019 Popsugar Challenge Prompt #38: A novel based on a true story**
I read this out loud to my eight year old and we both loved it. What a wonderful, tender story.
Other reviewers have summarized this book better than I will. Suffice it to say that Ivan and the various other animal and human characters were expertly described and reflected through Ivan's eyes - so much so that I cannot imagine it being written from third-person, much less anyone else's. Although a little heavy-handed in the message, I don't think the target audience of upper-elementary and middle school students will feel that way, and it may even ignite some interest in research and activ

Read this one aloud to the 3rd grade over approx. 2 months. The kids loved it, although there are many sad sections of the book.

While the story isn't all that special (in my opinion, anyway), the prose is good -- simple yet powerful. Even though this isn't on par with some other Newbery-winners, it's short and not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
