It really is impossible to write a review of A Dance with Dragons without reflecting on the wait any fan of GRRM had to endure to get this book into his or her hands. For years we've been waiting on this book, the other half to A Feast for Crows, and, while it certainly gave more of what we've come to expect of Martin, it also failed to answer many questions that we've had years to dream up.

Unfortunately I think was definitely the weakest book in the series. Very little actually happens in the various story arcs (except in the last 50 pgs) and there are so many different point of view I kind of stopped caring and started skimming. Even doing that it took me months to read because I would put it down for weeks a time. Martin's editors seriously need to step it up. I hope the fame of the tv show isn't ruining Martin's ability to write great books.

This book is probably 500 pages too long. Maybe 600. But it finally picked up towards the end.
I'm not entirely sure what I think about this installment. Definitely feel like the title is a misnomer. But at least it's a return to Westeros... so good enough for me. ...more

SO GOOD! Martin redeemed himself after the last volume - this one was much more satisfying, with a return to the viewpoint characters in which I'm most invested. Of course, now I'm going to have a looooooong wait until the next one comes out...
