Zoey is your typical teen until she is marked to become a vampire. Once marked Zoey must enter the House of Night, a finishing school for fledgling vampires, where those that survive the change learn how to be adult vampires. Of course as is the case in all vampire books these days, Zoey is different she is special, and extremely whiny and annoying. I mean really she is concerned that liking the taste of blood makes her weird, isn't that vampires are supposed to like! I just want one of these bo

so i can't finish this one. i've been reading the teen vampire series out there, but this one bothered me beyond belief - not because of the vampires, or the mythology, or whatever, but the blatant stereotyping and racism and . . . i haven't read text so infused with really offensive characterizations in a long time.
in the end, these are my guilty pleasures, and i was getting no pleasure from reading this, only uncomfortable feelings about how different ethnic groups are portrayed. admittedly, ...more

I wanted to like this, I really did! I swear! But, I didn't. First of all, it was preachy. It was so obviously written to try to be an example to girls it was hard to get past it. And apparently you're a slut if you kiss outside a dorm where people can see you and you wear make-up!! AHHH, I think I might be a slut then!? And what's with the obsession with blow jobs? Not only was there a scene that ALMOST had one in it, it was also reference like a jillion times in a book. And it was made to seem

And yet another series sucks me in.
No pun intended.
I found this book as I was browsing in the borders YA section... and an associate stopped to ask if I was looking for a new series. Then she marched me right over to the House of Night books and grabbed the first one, Marked. She said "I'm reading this, and so is my daughter and my mother.. we LOVE them. They're like Twilight but with more action and less angst". SOLD.
I took it home and just plowed right through it.. and really enjoyed it. I'm l ...more

I thought I would really like this book. I truly did. So, I purchased the first three in the series from the Borders closing sale.
The writing was blah. I cringed every time she used the phrase "easy-peasy". I wanted to stop reading every time the word 'retard' was mentioned.
I've been flipping between giving this one or two stars. It was slightly entertaining during some parts, so I bumped it up generously to a two star.

I've been a bit preoccupied with teen fiction lately because of my teaching profession...but I LOVED this book. It was witty and romantic and interesting!!! :) I'm excited to read the next few!!
