I read this play originally in 8th grade in my Catholic K-8 school. At the time, I understood there were some sexual undertones, and some manipulation by the fairies, mostly, but I didn't grasp everything going on. I might have read it again post-college, when I took a Shakespeare class for subject-area competency, but it clearly didn't take a lick of memory from me. Read in conjunction with King of Shadows, a kid's book where the actors are putting on a production of this play and one of the actors travels back in time to a production with Shakespeare himself. A silly but enjoyable book and a good excuse to reread this delightful play that I probably hadn't read in twenty years.

I must be a jaded modern reader: it's not quite fair to look back and read a play from several centuries ago, that's influenced art and literature today, and expect it to be a little less cliched.

I have to admit that I did have some difficulty understanding a bit of what they were saying. But my first thought was, "These people sure do sleep a lot in the woods."
