Take one part Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient, add a touch of Pat Barker's The Ghost Road and a whole lot of Margaret Mead's Coming of Age in Samoa centered on several fictional New Guinea tribes and one has a glimpse of this fascinating book detailing the early years of anthropological studies. This was a book for my book club. I would have never picked a book about anothropologists but I really enjoyed this. There is a part where they discuss if you love a person like bread or wine that I thought was insightful. Love seemed to be the bottom line of all of it and that is always a good message.
