I began 50 Shades having a pretty good idea what I was in for: a poorly written retelling of Twilight that involved S&M and graphic erotica.
I went in intending to find out what the hype was all about and to get in on the trend while it was happening.
I gave up about halfway in. As other reviewers have mentioned, Ana says "Oh my" ridiculously often. Worse, Christian, this sophisticated Dominant, keeps saying a very trite "Baby." It got obnoxious.
As far as the sex stuff, well, I'm a self-proclaime ...more

To be fair, the quality got slightly, SLIGHTLY less terrible past the halfway point, but then you would be interrupted by yet another reference to her INNER GODDESS and the same exact exchange of "You're biting your lip... you know what that does to me...", chin-grabbing, hair-pulling, "'Are you hungry?' 'NOT FOR FOOD...' I whispered!!!!!", etc.
Overall, it is quite wretched. I do love that Jacob was turned into a Jose. "Ay dios mio!" ...more

3.5 stars. I hated the constant inner goddess, lip biting, and eating references. Just repetitive and annoying enough to drive me crazy. From the beginning there were so many parallels to Twilight (clumsy, both parents, plain looks but so many men are in love with her, he tries to stay away and is so overprotective, music, he's wise beyond his years and can read people except for her, etc) that it made it a frustrating read. And the writing wasn't great, but I knew that ahead of time and didn't

I recently watched The Book Club starring Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton and 2 others where this book is the one they get into discussing at their meet. I decided to re-read the book after watching the movie as I was intrigued by their giggles and mirth. But......................................
This has got to be one of the worst "erotic" books ever. Yes the premise was novel with BDSM issues but the dialogues are so overtly cliched that it makes me wanna abuse the shit out of this novel

Entertaining read. But the characters are somewhat shallow and vapid. The eye rolling, lip biting and "Holy F**k" comments throughout are incredibly overused. Not great writing, but then I was looking for a fluffy read... and I certainly got that.

Reading this for my new neighborhood book club. We'll see!

Well, that was SO not what I normally read. I have a feeling I am going to know WAY more about my neighbors than I need to after this book club meeting and discussion. Hehe! ...more

Eh... It was ok. The language was limited and repetitive, the story was mediocre. It reminded me a lot of Twilight (we get it, he's gorgeous, he's perfectly chiseled with burnished copper highlights, can we assume your reader has a memory slightly more functional than an insect and move on?) with its vapid girliness, but I finished it (I also read all of the Twilight series, cursing myself the entire way). So, in a nutshell: eh... it was ok.

Not my typical fair but that is not why I only went with 2 stars. It just didnt impress me. Something about a virgin college graduate who doesnt know how to pleasure herslef that just doesnt ring true in 2012. Not to mention her immediate and mostly willingness to jump into the world of BDSM.... I have been told to give the second book a chance before writing off the series so I am and so far it is better than the first...

I couldn't finish this one. If I would've known going in that it began as Twilight fan fiction, I never would've picked it up. I got about 100 pages in and couldn't take either of the characters anymore. Ugh. I hate when I get sucked in by the media. :(

I had to pick this up after hearing about this everywhere. The writing quality is a little lacking and it's a little too Twilight-esque for me.
