there's this dynamic where Murakami didn't really want us to read this but we sorry if insisted, and so it's a bit awkward to say anything negative because, you know, he didn't want us to read it anyway. but this does read as a very early work. I hoped for a little more magic. I'm grateful for The Rat's origin story (kind of), but it didn't really fulfill my hopes.
