Ugh. I don't read a lot of thrillers (the only other one I can think of is Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which I liked), but I think I can still safely say that it's not a genre issue, I'm just not a fan of this one. I like a good mystery, I looovee unreliable narrators, I am also okay with reading about mental illness and addiction, but somehow those things didn't add up to a positive in this book for me. I wanted to like it more. This book is good, but it's no Gone Girl. The Scooby Doo ending where the villain describes at length why s/he did it was a bit contrived.

This book was mentioned to me by a friend and I heard it was a better version of 'Gone Girl'. I agree with that comparison. I felt there was more action in the beginning of this book, but did find it to get slow after that. Good mystery, flawed characters but not the same darkness as "gone Girl' had to it in my opinion.

20% in and there's no mystery yet, just a whole lot of really cringey social interactions. I don't think this book is for me, and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who gets stressed out by embarrassing situations in fiction.
