I have a theory that Pessl found herself writing a thriller, but didnt want to be accused of writing a thriller, so she made it as long and drawn out as possible. I’m all for atmosphere, if it actually creates an atmosphere. But passages like this:

I'm not usually into mytery/thriller/suspense novels. Granted, I have a few authors I follow pretty religiously (Ahem, Tana French, I'm so ready for your next), but mostly 10 years of reading James Patterson and Stuart Woods books pretty much put me off from the genre for the last few years. The first 3/4s of the book were great; riveting, suspenseful, scary in all the good ways. The last quarter, where things were wrapped up in a nice bow, was also good, but not as good. Unsure if that's because I wanted the book to end magically instead of realistically, or because the writing wasn't as strong. Or perhaps it's just because this is a fairly long book and I was ready for it to be over.

Recommended for everyone; it's a really good book!

Holy shit! This is a really good ride. And I'm really glad I read it in October because it gets CREEPY in parts. Not Stephen King creepy, but creepy in a good mystery way. Loved all the pop culture references and loved the characters. ...more
