I have a theory that Pessl found herself writing a thriller, but didnt want to be accused of writing a thriller, so she made it as long and drawn out as possible. I’m all for atmosphere, if it actually creates an atmosphere. But passages like this:

I'm not usually into mytery/thriller/suspense novels. The first 3/4s of the book were great; riveting, suspenseful, scary in all the good ways. The last quarter, where things were wrapped up in a nice bow, was also good, but not as good. Unsure if that's because I wanted the book to end magically instead of realistically, or because the writing wasn't as strong. Or perhaps it's just because this is a fairly long book and I was ready for it to be over.

Holy shit! This is a really good ride. And I'm really glad I read it in October because it gets CREEPY in parts. Not Stephen King creepy, but creepy in a good mystery way. Loved all the pop culture references and loved the characters.
