This is an early novel of Oyeyemi’s and blends dark folklore, gothic horror, and issues of social and racial justice. This book requires a lot of the reader, not only because of the themes, but the structure is unconventional, including its use of a narrators, each of whom have their own agendas. Really disappointed because I wanted to love this, but it wasn't for me. I disliked nearly every character, perhaps with the exception of Ore, and worse than that, I didn't really care about what was going on. So much was confusing, which I think was the intention at points, but I don't care for that in my reading experience. I don't like feeling disoriented or confused, and the abrupt switching of perspectives was too jarring and not at all enjoyable for me.
