This is an early novel of Oyeyemi’s and blends dark folklore, gothic horror, and issues of social and racial justice. This book requires a lot of the reader, not only because of the themes, but the structure is unconventional, including its use of a narrators, each of whom have their own agendas. We meet Miranda, a modern day young woman from Dover who is struggling with grief, but also against the forces the ancestral house where she lives with her father and twin, and her maternal family line,

Really disappointed because I wanted to love this, but it wasn't for me. I disliked nearly every character, perhaps with the exception of Ore, and worse than that, I didn't really care about what was going on. So much was confusing, which I think was the intention at points, but I don't care for that in my reading experience. I don't like feeling disoriented or confused, and the abrupt switching of perspectives was too jarring and not at all enjoyable for me.
