Honestly I had no idea what to expect when I started this book. I have never even seen the movie. So I was pleasantly surprised when I ended up loving it. I listened to the audiobook and must say the narrator (Jim Fyfe) did a great job. I had a difficult time pausing it even for a second. I'm glad I finally got around to reading this book. ...more

Compelling story and great protagonist. Sometimes a bit schmaltzy but worth a read. My dad lived in Tulsa as a teenager so it feels familiar (although he’s about 10 years older than S.E. Hinton). And I have fond memories of the 1983 movie with all those cute 80s actors.

Somehow I managed to get through school without being assigned this. Probably it wasn't considered "classic"enough to study at the time and we never got to study modern classics. I remember wanting to go to the movie when it came out.
The story is told through the eyes of Ponyboy. Stories told from a child's point of view always seem genuine and sad events more real.

I became very emotionally invested in this book very quickly, and when things happened to the characters I had some intense feelings about it all. The writing was simple but the themes were well crafted. I can see why middle school English classes have adopted this book in their curriculum; the ideas about choices having lasting consequences and not blindly following the script you’ve been given are good ones for seventh graders.

Parents and clean readers: plenty of violence (I thought it was app
