I selected this classic for the 2016 BookRiot Read Harder category "Read a horror book." Now that I've finished the book, I also plan to watch the 1931 movie adaptation ("Frankenstein") and 1935 sequel ("Bride of Frankenstein"), which would have also fit another BookRiot Read Harder category ("Read a book that was adapted into a movie, then watch the movie. Update: Reread again in January 2023 with my high schoolers, and I enjoyed it much more the second time through…so bumping it up a star. I forgot how much death is in this book, but I sympathized with the monster this time around and kind of thought Victor was an idiot. Mostly, I appreciated the craft of writing that young Mary Shelley mastered in this book.

How many times can an author use the word 'wretch'? It still remains a wonderful meditation on the human spirit, the strive of amibition and what it means to be a monster.
