I tried to read this book 2, 3 times? I finally received the book on CD and listened to it. I absolutely loved this book. The beginning was hard - listening to Cheryl describe her sad life with her heroin use, her marriage fell apart and her mother passed away. However, i kept listening and what a joy this book turned in to. I loved listning to Cheryl's adventure on the Pacific Coast Trail and the people she met. 3.5 stars. At first I wasn't sure about this one...the first half seemed a little too much like Eat, Pray, Love in the woods. The difference here, however, is that while Elizabeth Gilbert did her world travels KNOWING she was going to write a book about it, Cheryl Strayed hiked the Pacific Crest Trail for herself. This was an assignment for my Travel Group called Go Girls! It was amazing, and I seriously want to find a copy of the movie I didn't know exist until we met again. I felt it really easy to fall into the the mess of the memoir, about the loss of important people in your life and how sometimes you're always looking for something in the world and in yourself. I liked that there wasn't anything neat and prepared about it. I feel like I want to give this book more of a 3.5 than a 4 star, but I also ...more
