Apparently this book is famous. The cover of my particular edition brags that it’s “the unsurpassed modern masterpiece of romantic suspense; … one of the bestselling novels of all time” and it’s even been made into a Hitchcock film that it seems everyone’s seen but me. I, however, was unfamiliar with the story. After reading through the first couple chapters, I was hooked on this book. I’d curl up under the covers and read a few pages before bedtime, all the while composing phrases in my mind fo

I re-read this book every so often, I don't know why I like it so much. The nameless narrator, the second Mrs de Winter, is shy and awkward as hell and the ultimate introvert. The writing is so beautiful- you can taste the salt in the air, smell the scent of azaleas, hear the ocean pounding on the rocks. I wish a happy ending for Maxim and his new bride, but the ending is so open and vague I'm glad you can interpret it for yourself.

I listened to the first two-thirds of this as an audiobook, then cassette 9 of 11 on my library copy was broken, so I ended up reading the last 100 pages or so in print. But I'm sure my reading was colored by the narrator's voice from the audio cassette version that I'd been listening to.
A very creepy story. I sensed some of what was coming in the plot from the foreshadowing, but was still on the edge of my seat waiting to see it all unfold. Its unusual to read a book where the title character i ...more

I just don't know what to say about Rebecca. I have a feeling she wouldn't even know where to start with herself.
Let me begin this review by saying that for a few years, a period of time that coincided with the onset of my adolescence, I adored Jane Eyre. It was my default curl-up next to the wall heater during winter break book. Yeah, we didn't have a fireplace.
So here I am, quite a few winters later, in December 2012. I revert to my tried and trues during this time of year, my faithful Sherlo ...more

*Spoiler alert* The book is slow and took me almost half to really get into. The main character is one of the most pathetic, annoying female characters I have encountered. And I hate that after she's found out what her husband has done that all she think about is that he never loved his first wife. She doesn't care that he murdered her! Honestly, I can understand loving someone after they've done something horrible, but not even to think about the act in a negative way or think about it really a

The narrator for this book did an excellent job conveying the unnamed narrator's voice. I only listened to the first two-thirds; then cassette 9 of 11 of my library copy was broken, so I didn't hear the end of the book (I read it in print instead). A very enjoyable story.

"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again," is a real grabber of an opening line, and how this story unfolds is quite interesting. I found the opening chapters a bit slow, but the novel really picks up steam in the second half.
