I love this book. It's about this girl who is involved in a horrible car accident and she has to decide whether she wants to stay (basically continue to live in the aftermath) or leave and discover whatever comes next. The chapters are interspersed with memories that Mia, the main character, has of her life and her boyfriend, Adam. I don't want to give too much away but this is a really great book.

I read this at the suggestion of a sixth grade student. It's her current favorite book. I totally get this. It's romantic, very, and yet not explicit, so I don't imagine parents would have any issues with the relationship between the two main characters. It's theme dark, there's a tragedy, but the way the novel is structured, with flashbacks and an excellent character device, the book is actually uplifting. Out for a drive with her family, Mia suddenly finds herself standing amidst the debris of a horrible accident. She sees her parents' bodies and knows they are dead. Her little brother is gravely injured, perhaps dead as well. As her body lies in a coma, Mia thinks about her life and wonders what is left to live for. Mia wishes someone else would make the choice for her, but only she can decide whether to welcome her death or fight for her life.

I liked the concept of choosing between living or letting go and I liked being able to follow Mia's process of choosing as she remembered life before the accident and considered what life would hold after the accident. I wasn't a fan of the language and a few of the cheesier, cliched scenes. It was an interesting concept but I don't get the huge hype. I'm more intrigued by the movie now and curious how they make the story work on film.

What a tragic tale! Mia loses her whole family in a bad car accident while she herself hovers outside of her body watching her friends and extended family keep vigil over her. She has the hardest decision in the whole world ahead of her... live or die?
