Heavy research combined with a creative narrative drive this unusual love story. It seems timely this book has come out with so much discussion over North Korea. A new leader, long range missiles, nuclear options all saber rattling, so it seems important to know more about the country. Adam Johnson has done an amazing job capturing what it is like to live in North Korea. Some of the scenarios described seem too incredible to be real, making 1984 seem like a vacation. This is by far the best book I've read in years.
Jun Do is the only son of the Orphan Master, the man in charge of a house full of boys. Jun Do allocates who eats first, who sleeps in the freezing corners of the room. He goes with the boys into the mines deep beneath North and South Korea, he learns to fight in the dark when even your opponent is blind.

DNF. Boring as hell.

I have twice tried to read this book, and twice I have had to stop because it was giving me nightmares. I just can't read/watch violence. But, I did like it otherwise!
