I listened to the audio book and I’d think if I’d read it instead I wouldn’t have liked it as much, the narrator was very good.Story is based of a tragic childhood that Eleanor had and this history shaped her as a not very successful social person. She is dramatically under her brutal mother’s influence and see everything from a very strict point of view.

When a kind-hearted IT guy crosses path with her and starts to befriend her, she finds herself in strange, funny situations. It’s not a funny b

I loved this book. The character development, the mixture of funny moments and serious subjects, the slow unraveling of Eleanor's past. Devoured it and took lots of notes so I can remember things to talk about with my book club next month. <3 ...more

Beautiful and tragic; as clear a character voice as I am like to come across all year.

I fell in love with this book from the very first page. honestly, I think whoever wrote the flap copy did a disservice to this book. it's so much more than a tale of one lonely woman and the two friends she accidentally makes. its a story of mental illness, coping mechanisms, and the power of human kindness. it's by far the best book ive read so far this year and I'll definitely be recommending it to, well, basically everyone I know. ...more

Reading this books is like befriending an eccentric loner and learning all about her. Eleanor struggles with appropriate social skills and, in the beginning, tends to avoid social interactions as much as possible. Yet her story takes us on her journey growing, making new friends, and doing all sorts of things outside of her comfort zone. She shares many thoughts that the introvert in you will relate to.

I listened to this on audio and it was a good reason for driving. Narrator with an accent, lovable characters, bit of a twist, first person point of view, some humor, a lot of character growth... all things I love in a book.

A little simplistic and predictable. But also funny and tender up-lit.

Reading this on the heels of “Three Things About Elsie” made for an interesting comparison.

I loved this book and the characters of Eleanor and Raymond. I was reminded of another book I really liked - Olive Kitteredge. Both Eleanor and Olive are quirky and believable to me. I don't ordinarily re-read many books, but I might get my own copy of this so that I can enjoy all the smart and funny parts of it again. ...more

Read alikes: Remarkably Bright Creatures for the charming, reclusive main character, and found family. The Midnight Library for the trauma and mental health issues.

I'm so sad that Chris O'Dowd probably won't play Raymond because he'd be so freaking perfect for the role. ...more
