Yep, it's 100% as good as everyone says. Not only that, but it's also proof that it's possible to write a long period romance and not have it get repetitive and boring during the middle 2/3 while you wait for the inevitable coupling. (TBH, it's reassuring that it's ok I'm so bored by like 75% of the romances/romance-adjacent books I read -- I was starting to think making the story compelling throughout wasn't possible.) In addition, it's a fun as hell story with representation of varied sexualit ...more

Monty is a gentleman in name only. He is much more interested in partying and carousing (mostly with other men) than he is with learning how to run an estate, something that has angered his father greatly. This was a fun book that started out as a young man's last hurrah before taking up the mantle of his father's business...and turned into an action novel with alchemy and pirates. (I guess I never read all the way to the end of the description.) I liked the novel more when it was being what seemed to be realistic, and felt like it got off track (and stayed there) once they were talking about immortality. There are many poignant moments, and it is nice to see how Monty grew up and discovered other ...more

A rip-roaring romp through 18th century Europe that feels like the first chapter to this young man's discovery of self and what it really means to have a good life. Honorable Mentions to his companions: plucky, capable, someone-you'd-want-by-your side-in-case-of-emergency-sister and endlessly patient love interest BFF. ...more

4.5 stars for this absolutely delightful romp. Clearly I’ve been missing out on this genre, where are all the other YA historical adventure books with a gay romance?!?

I’ll keep reading these because of how much adventure there is, but I hope Monty grows more throughout.
