Some books are so great that I devour them in one sitting. This book was so great I had to sample it slowly over several weeks.

Monty is a gentleman in name only. He is much more interested in partying and carousing (mostly with other men) than he is with learning how to run an estate, something that has angered his father greatly. So he has issued an ultimatum. Monty will be allowed to go on a "grand tour" of Europe with his sister, Felicity, and his best friend (and unrequited crush) Percy, but after that, Monty will buckle down and work, or he will be disowned.

But the tour isn't quite what Monty expected, and when, in

I really liked this book and read it in less than 48 hours. It was fun. As I noted in a previous update, Monty's voice is dry and sarcastic and it is glorious - I was immediately hooked by the kind of irreverence that leaves me giggling to myself. Monty is also a hot mess, and not the kind of hot mess that's often depicted in YA, where a kid, like, can't get along with their loving parents. He's an actual hot mess, probably an alcoholic and a gambling addict, with a toxic lack of attachment to a ...more

Monty (gentlemen, heir, bisexual, in love with his best friend), Percy (biracial, ill, said best friend) and Felicity (Monty's sister, quietly rebellious) are sent off on a Grand Tour that goes awry (pirates, highway men, alchemy, etc). This had a slight fanfic feel to it, a slick romp with lots of shenanigans, a retelling of Felicity's story, perhaps. It feels like the type of story that would normally have been Felicity's, and I'm glad it was Monty's instead--though I'm glad to see the next bo ...more

This was a fun book that started out as a young man's last hurrah before taking up the mantle of his father's business...and turned into an action novel with alchemy and pirates. (I guess I never read all the way to the end of the description.) I liked the novel more when it was being what seemed to be realistic, and felt like it got off track (and stayed there) once they were talking about immortality. There are many poignant moments, and it is nice to see how Monty grew up and discovered other ...more

A completely charming YA adventure/love story featuring Monty, a lovable reprobate and the boy he adores, along with Monty's sister, who is to be delivered to a finishing school in Marseille. The trio are off on their Grand Tour before the realities of adult life end all their fun. Adventures and misadventures, including a theft at Versailles, an attack by highwaymen, and pirates, come up in quick order and by the end our hero has found his soul. ...more

That was QUITE good! I thought it was just going to be a historical romance, but it turned out to also have quite a bit of adventure and some truly delightful characters. I'm ready to dive immediately into the second book in the series! ...more
