What Members Thought

The best non-fiction I've read since The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America. You can not believe this stuff really happened! The story unfolds in a way that grabs your attention from the start and I didn't want to put it down. And just when I thought everything was figured out, there's more! Felt more like a juicy historical fiction novel than real non-fiction. Definitely recommended for those that like history.

I've been spending a lot of time recently thinking about the boundaries between true crime and "proper" (tm) history. This book sits *right* on that line and is a fantastic, narrative way into a larger story about exploitation, racism, and the US government's slow response to crimes against Native Americans. Book Riot Read Harder 2023: nonfiction book on BIPOC history
3.5 stars. Also read this for @sharonsaysso's book club! While the subject matter of this book is horrifying, and the fact that these events were swept under the rug and forgotten for a century even more so, this book *dragged*. I really slogged through the middle section of this. Not sure this should've been made into a full book, maybe just an investigative article? Snaps to the author and his thorough research.
