I haven’t read much sci-fi in the past number of years and in reading this I remember the different reading muscle one must use to read sci-fi. It is the muscle that forces you to completely submit to the writer’s world, since it is a world constructed by the writer- one can also make this argument about fantasy, but usually fantasy begin at some recognizable mythic point and leaps from there.

Ahhhhh so good! So perfect to read for these times of human self-destruction. Maybe we can look forward to our genderless, matriarchal, sexy extraterrestrial saviors? 🤞

An engrossing read, I sat down to try this book and didn't move again until I finished it. I am hesitant to start book two in the series though, as parts are heartwrenching and I don't see a lot of potential for happiness...

Dawn is equally disturbing and compelling. I kept going back to it to find out what would happen next, despite cringing through some of the scenes and feeling the fear, isolation, and claustrophobia Lilith must have felt. There is so much contained in this book, and so many heavy, interrelated themes to think about: consent and autonomy, race, gender roles, power dynamics and power structures...I plan to finish the trilogy, but may need a breather before I keep reading.

There are some things that still make me wildly uncomfortable in fiction. Butler manages to employ a number of them, and I'm hoping I get some kind of human resolution in the next two installments.
