I would give this book six stars if I could. I am completely serious when I say this is Tolkien-level worldbuilding. This book is so intricate, terrifying, and fascinating that I felt like I had gone through a rollercoaster of emotions by the end. This was an awesome, wild read. Jemisin has crafted an incredible, sophisticated and thought-provoking world, filled with insanely detailed history, creatures and rules, all of which she doles out mysteriously over the course of the novel. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I put this in the post-apocalyptic bucket but it's more like ongoing apocalypse. This is a fantastical story of a far future where a woman has to control her temper because otherwise she might actually set off a volcano. And she's doing that while mourning a child. Oh yeah, trigger warning for death of a child for this book. Also, I notice award winning literature continues to involve either death of a child or sexual assault/rape. Really, really compelling read. Absolutely extraordinary world building, characterization, and a slow build of a plot. You bet I'll be continuing with the series. I read the audiobook and found the narration very good as well.
