The first few chapters (BLOOD) were ROUGH for a vegetarian, let me tell you! But I got through the butchery and overall really enjoyed this. It reminded me a little of The Glass Castle meets Relish: My Life in the Kitchen.

I did not love this book, though I read it all and found it engaging. I liked so many of the details, especially the creation of the family dynamic at the opening chapter, the strong family. I wanted to throw it across the room by the end, and perhaps that means it's a good book. It was certainly well written. I found myself wanting to eat at her restaurant without wanting to know more about her.

Starts out as a really superlative memoir, but then goes on too long re: her loveless green card marriage, becoming a kind of metaphor for her loveless green card marriage. Learn when to call it quits, girl.
I truly expected to like this book but I just couldn't get into it. 140 pages in and I started enjoying my rereads more--that meant it was time to put the book down.

Pretentious, not very well written and boring in its description of everything. I held off on rating until after book club, in case my mind was changed. But it wasn't. Worst book of the year.
