The first few chapters (BLOOD) were ROUGH for a vegetarian, let me tell you! But I got through the butchery and overall really enjoyed this. It reminded me a little of The Glass Castle meets Relish: My Life in the Kitchen.

Sidenote: after I finished this I immediately googled to see if she and her husband had gotten divorced... apparently not. I wonder if he read this book??

Hamilton writes beautifully but her memoir falls short. She's at her best describing food. It's when she discusses her personal life that the book takes a downturn. She's remarkable in her lack of insight into her own behavior. She mentions off hand that she hasn't spoken to her mother in twenty years. Why? I'm not sure Hamilton knows and I certainly don't. She also described her marriage - there's no real exploration here but apparently the relationship is unsatisfactory. ...more

Starts out as a really superlative memoir, but then goes on too long re: her loveless green card marriage, becoming a kind of metaphor for her loveless green card marriage. Learn when to call it quits, girl.

I started out really enjoying this book - the author had a unique story and a background in writing so I was enthralled by her unorthodox upbringing. However, the second half of the book took a super negative turn and I realized that this book was not so much a memoir but a chance for the author to get all her rage out on paper. She clearly hates her mother, most of her siblings and the father of her children and I resented the fact that a pretty cool book turned into a therapy session at my exp ...more

Pretentious, not very well written and boring in its description of everything. I held off on rating until after book club, in case my mind was changed. But it wasn't. Worst book of the year. ...more

I really liked this book--a strong woman Finds her passion, love, and family. I loved the author-her grittiness, her no BS attitude, and the way she is unapologetic about who she is and who she wants to be. She grows up, learns about food, fights with her family, opens a restaurant, creates a family, and is a successful chef. Great story. Recommended.
