The first few chapters (BLOOD) were ROUGH for a vegetarian, let me tell you! But I got through the butchery and overall really enjoyed this. It reminded me a little of The Glass Castle meets Relish: My Life in the Kitchen.
Sidenote: after I finished this I immediately googled to see if she and her husband had gotten divorced... apparently not. I wonder if he read this book?? ...more

Hamilton writes beautifully but her memoir falls short. She's at her best describing food. It's when she discusses her personal life that the book takes a downturn. She's remarkable in her lack of insight into her own behavior. She mentions off hand that she hasn't spoken to her mother in twenty years. Why? I'm not sure Hamilton knows and I certainly don't. I really liked this book--a strong woman Finds her passion, love, and family. I loved the author-her grittiness, her no BS attitude, and the way she is unapologetic about who she is and who she wants to be. She grows up, learns about food, fights with her family, opens a restaurant, creates a family, and is a successful chef. Great story. Recommended.
