After so much hype, and that fabulous cliffhanger ending of book #2, I was underwhelmed by the finale. At the beginning, Tris is still struggling to stay alive and keep her friends alive in the new new world order. She must decide what energy to put into the "original mission" of the town, as told to them by her likely ancestor. Do they leave the city gates? Is there a world left outside them? My goal was to write review of the series when I'd read it from cover to cover. So here goes.

One of the greatest things I can say about the series is that it eschews SO many of the YA tropes that seem to litter the genre. Is it trope-free? No. But it's not propped up by a bunch of half-characters who never grow and, frankly, you don't expect most of the twists she throws at you.

I also think the central questions--and Veronica Roth's answers--were really important. How do you define yourself as a person--the way your parents define themselves or by your faith or by your allegiances or by biology? And what are the repercussions of bending to--or completely defying--"the way things work"? In this series sometimes there's no good choice and the characters have to acknowledge it, look ahead at the possibilities, and decide for themselves.

The series (without saying too much) is also not fair in the same way life isn't fair. People die. People lie. Friendships crumble. Seemingly bad people do good things. Seemingly good people do bad things. No matter what their age, people are scared, hurt, broken, brave, independent, and selfless. And because of those good things that shine through, there's still hope for the broken world and it's broken people.

Is book 3 perfect? No. I didn't feel like I connected as well with it as I did the others. I intellectually liked the philosophy of the answers she started offering for all the big plot questions she'd asked in earlier books, but I'm not sure I emotionally liked how things happened.

That being said, I couldn't tear my eyes away from the ending. Once everything started coming together, she had me. She had me good.

So is it worth a read? YES. Is it better than Hunger Games (the question I have to imagine everyone will ask)? It's *different*: there are people who love THG who will love this too, people who disliked THG who will love this, and people who will never connect with either (and plenty in between). Will I read it again? It's probable. And maybe I'll be more ready for the story she's telling. I'll let you know then. :) ...more

Allegiant was a somewhat disappointing conclusion to the story begun in Divergent and continued in Insurgent. While the first two books were action packed and kept me guessing at who to trust and what would happen, this book got bogged down in romantic trysts and complicated conspiracies.

Tris and Tobias begin Allegiant unsure of where they stand with each other. Both have made choices they regret. Can they find common ground and rebuild their trust to resume a relationship? While I like that Rot ...more
