I requested The Selection from the library after asking friends for a book that was quick, easy and offered a bit of romance. I don't think I would ever have read this book because the cover is SO girly girly - which is odd because the book isn't. Instead, the main character is incredibly down to earth.
What I liked most about this book wasn't necessarily the romance, but the overall feel of it. I liked that it felt sort of like a fantasy novel (The Girl of Fire and Thorns comes to mind) mixed wi ...more

I started reading for the premise - think The Hunger Games meets "The Bachelor - and stayed because the story was quite compelling. I ended up reading the whole thing in a matter of hours, getting sucked into the developing relationships between America and the other girls as well as Maxon, not to mention the overhanging rebellion. What's Marlee's secret? What are the rebels looking for?

I think I might be embarrassed to give such a high rating, but the book must have just come around at the right time for me. Kind of a guilty pleasure read, perhaps. Let's be frank: the world was not very well developed, with some arbitrary caste system, some obnoxious entitled girls, some annoying poor communication, and a lame cliffhanger ending. Nevertheless, I liked the protagonist and I'd like to know what happens next (PLEASE don't be a trilogy)!!

So it seems there is a lot of controversy about this book. I knew nothing when I read it. Actually I still don't know what it is. I thought this was a decent book. Some parts of it were unbelievable but isn't that the case with most books? I definitely have a "team" and what to see where that relationship could go if she would let it.

Exactly the kind of light fluffiness I needed.
I could've done without the dystopian element, though. I didn't really think it added anything to the plot, and once I stopped being annoyed by it and (rightfully) ignored it, I enjoyed the book a lot more. ...more

Good, fun story, very Bachelor-esque plot going on. I enjoyed it, but as it is the first book of a trilogy, I'm a little worried that there isn't enough plot for 3 books. The story was good, and I liked learning about the contest, but judging from the titles of the next two (The Elite and The One) they are all centered around this competition. I hope some other plot lines spring up in the next two books.
