I do remember that the magical realism was there, but significantly less annoying for me than in other books (like Hundred Years of Solitude, which I have tried and failed to read 3 times). In any event, the interesting thing I can add about this book is a comment on the recipes. After receiving a dozen roses from my now-husband (a Spanish Lit major), I decided to try it. I liked the book because it was an easy and fast read. I do have some issues with it, though. Some of the characters are just too flat for me to care about them. It just didn't completely jive with my taste I guess. This is a good book for people looking to pass the time.
