I struggle with magical realism. It just seems silly to me. It seemed even sillier when I read that Ms Esquivel said this isn't "magical realism," it's just "normal and an everyday thing to me."

I really enjoyed this book, and it's one of the first novels I've read in Spanish, which definitely added to my enjoyment.

Not my book. I get really limited mileage out of magical realism these days, and the love story is pretty much everything I hate in love stories. I did enjoy the recipes and food writing, and Gertrudis is THE BEST ever.
