This was a re-read for me, but I only have a vague memory of the plot from my first read, many years ago. I had a complex reaction. The plot is delightfully full of political intrigue and adventure, but on the other hand, this feels quite dated, full of the sort of casual sexism and bigotry that was common in SF at the time. I finally got around to reading this one after a lifetime of feeling guilty for having not gotten to it yet. I appreciated it from the standpoint of building a complex story and really creating a complete universe. But it left me cold, somehow. I felt like it kept the reader at arm's length, and there weren't any characters to really latch onto and root for. And the jargon was really confusing and offputting at times.
