Amazing, of course. Sherlock Holmes was definitely more of the witty aristocrat in the new movie than he is portrayed on the older films. He is wealthy, yes, but definitely has a wild streak about him. And though I tried to suss out these cases as I went along, only a few of them I was able to discern before the end. Short story collections are alternately awesome and a pain in the ass. Awesome because you can just pick them up, read a story or two, and then put them down and get back whenever. The pain in the ass is that "get back whenever" can turn into, as it was in this case, just about a year (and can presumably be even longer, I suppose).

While I didn't like the short story format as well as the novellas, Sherlock Holmes is always a good way to spend the night reading. In this format I miss the character development, the red herrings, the scenes of urban or rural 19th century life, and the actual detecting done by Holmes. Here the "victim" tells Holmes his story and almost at once (or within 24 hours) Holmes solves the puzzle or declares it no puzzle at all.
