It took me a little while to get into this but ahhh, so fun! There are a lot of familiar fantasy tropes and characters in here but it was just so fun I kept going. I liked that Maas assumes that you'll understand the tropes she's using without needing to fill in a ton of world-building... I think a certain type of fantasy fan would likely want way more info about the magic (or lack thereof) and political unrest happening here, but for me I was like, "great, I get it, let's move on, thanks!"

This was going to be a 3.5 because it spends too much time on the love triangle, but I bumped it up because it has a (view spoiler).

That being said, this is the latest teen assassin book I've read. Not the best, but up there. Celaena is wonderful - snarky, flirtatious, and a survivor. Utter shit as a narrative and in terms of narration, which sounded, bizarrely, as if the reader were performing a valley girl imitation for almost every character, with the occasional exception for male characters (which sounded like a six year old imitating Dad), and the one explicitly non-white character, who was both described and performed like a stereotypical "wise other."

I tried this Maas title because of the fervor around the series's final installment, but was yet again disappointed. Va

2024: re-read this in an attempt to make my way through all of the Maas books. Glad I gave it a second chance a decade later. Reading this in line with The Everygirl recommended reading order: https://theeverygirl.com/sarah-j-maas...

2014: Whiney. Inconsistent. Shallow and superficial. Predictable.

So far, this is my least favorite SJM series. Don’t get me wrong, it was an enjoyable, candy-like read, but it’s definitely YA, definitely a first book, and definitely written by a teenager. I’ll keep reading the series, but so far I prefer the more mature writing of the Crescent City series.
