It took me a little while to get into this but ahhh, so fun! There are a lot of familiar fantasy tropes and characters in here but it was just so fun I kept going. I liked that Maas assumes that you'll understand the tropes she's using without needing to fill in a ton of world-building... I think a certain type of fantasy fan would likely want way more info about the magic (or lack thereof) and political unrest happening here, but for me I was like, "great, I get it, let's move on, thanks!"

2024: re-read this in an attempt to make my way through all of the Maas books. Glad I gave it a second chance a decade later. Reading this in line with The Everygirl recommended reading order: https://theeverygirl.com/sarah-j-maas...
