Another favorite read to add to my favourite group, I borrowed this book off a friend who raved about it. I can see why, I've not been able to put it down , and have read it in a 4 hour marathon enjoying every glorious word written on the pages.
From the start of the narration , to the end I've enjoyed the story telling by Mrs De Winter. Though we never know her name I have a clear picture of her in my head, though I must admit I still keep seeing Charles Dance as Max de Winter for some unknown ...more

Shame on me for taking so long to read this book! It was such a pleasure to read - it hit all the right notes for me. Beautiful, detailed, haunting descriptions of locations serve as the background to this dark, mysterious book. The questioning and insecurities of our nameless heroine, the unreadable husband, the sinister house maid - it's all so good.

I had never read Rebecca, though I knew just a bit about it from popular culture. I decided to finally listen to it for a reading challenge task. It was so good, even though it started out a little slow. It has aged really well overall. I was surprised by the storyline, which wasn't what I'd expected. The narrator, Anna Massey, did an amazing job setting the mood, and her villain (or possible villain) character voices were perfect.

I read this book because it was hailed as the "Novel of the Century" (the 20th Century). I love any story set in a historical English manor house! However, this book did not live up to its billing. I felt that the narrator's character was weak and annoying... she added nothing to the story. She didn't even have a name. I read it through to the end, and at times didn't want to put it down, but it was not the novel of MY century. For me, The Thirteenth Tale is hands down the best gothic novel.

I read this multiple times in my early teens, when gothic novels held a strong appeal. I think this is the edition, with the artwork that appealed to me at the time. Last night, I was watching the film, directed by Hitchcock and so atmospheric. For the first time (doh) I noted the resemblance to Jane Eyre: moody, cynical man; young, trusting woman; beastly, hidden (in whatever way, dead or alive) first wife who haunts the story. Anyway, just out of curiosity I might give this another try.
