I am a Joe Hill fan from way back. I have loved all of his novels and still look forward to a new Locke and Key. This is something else. NOS4A2 is an epic on a much larger scale. Despite it's gargantuan size, I never felt the story dragged or slowed down. I managed to polish it off in about three days, and what a ride it was. Compelling book, although I don't feel it falls quite so neatly into the horror or thriller genres. Charles Manx is a demented old man who steals children away to Christmasland, which warps them into twisted monsters and leaves him young. Vic McQueen is a broken and imperfect protagonist, scarred by her encounter with Manx as a teen. Reading Joe Hill is like seeing an old friend who has changed their look just enough to make them hard to recognize. Of course, that only makes sense if you've read a lot of Stephen King. Joe Hill is like Stephen King for the modern age, with some similar traits but definitely his own style and voice. He obviously inherited his father's grim sense of humor. There are way more laugh-out-loud moments than you would expect in a book with a body count in the hundreds. And the bad guys... Is it clich
