This was recommended by so many people...and I'm sure it is "just me" as I appreciate gaiman's talent but I just had to give up as it wasn't appealing to me personally.

I have always loved Neil Gaiman's books for younger readers, but I confess that his adult novels have left me cold. He wrote (I thought) like someone who had made his start in comics and graphic novels. Although his writing was witty, his characters seemed shallow, and his settings seemed dim without the aid of pictures.

I read it, not quite sure how I finished it. Very very slow going. But for the summary: Shadow is in prison and gets released. However right before he's released he learns that that (view spoiler)

"A book involving a heist." Truly, at about page 540 (of 657), I had to google "where is the heist in American Gods?" because I couldn't remember it. I can enjoy a fantasy novel if it's well written and creates an interesting world. And the writing in this has moments of true brilliance. But the story was truly incomprehensible. It shifted between fantasy and reality at random and there was never any clue which one you were going to get on any particular page. So many of my friends not only love

A very long read, I can't say it's my favourite of Neil Gaiman's books. There were a lot of characters to concentrate on, and I didn't connect very well with them and I think that's why I've given the book 3 stars.
