In some series, one or more novels can function as a stand-alone. Sometimes that’s because enough backstory is added, sometimes it’s due to that particular series entry taking a different turn (focusing on different characters, settings, or plot threads). Wow. I really didn't expect the sequel to be up to par, but I really enjoyed it and the ending was perfect. I love the complexity of the relationship between the factions, especially given the ideal personality that members of particular factions are supposed to have. I enjoyed those who broke the set patterns, because that also made them divergent, even though they were not technically "Divergent".

I love this series and would like to give this 4.5, but that is not an option. It is another long read, but mostly worth it. You learn a lot more about each faction and how they are all needed to keep the "world" going. The factionless also make an appearance. Tris and Four meetup with old family and friends among them.

Disappointing. Tris became extremely annoying. Then, the secret that can't be explained is revealed. It could've easily been explained, which ruins so much of the book. 2.5
