Okay, I have to say that I did enjoy this book, it had it's funny moments, but the way the author handled some of the issues in it kind of got on my nerves. Also there was so much repetition of certain jokes that it became too much. The ending seemed to be rushed even though I saw what happened coming.

Overall it's more of a 3.5 but I decided to round it up because it did entertain me. I'll read the second one, Stand-off, to see how Ryan Dean has grown up since this book. ...more

Okay, honestly, I'm still reeling from one of the most painful endings I have ever read. (I mean that in a good way.) That being said, Winger is undoubtedly a powerful novel. There is something about the way Andrew Smith portrayed the slow process of "growing up" that felt very raw. There are certain aspects about it that tend to be glossed over or sugar-coated or even romanticized; Smith didn't do that in this book. He didn't censor the language, the emotions and thoughts, or even the violence ...more
