The Virgin Suicides was my first Jeffrey Eugenides. I've seen the movie (though it has been awhile) but I'd never gotten around to reading it. I saw Eugenides at Wordstock this year in Portland, and he got asked lots of questions about this book. It piqued my interest and I figured it was time to get around to reading it.

The five Lisbon sisters were almost worshipped by their entire neighborhood. Nonetheless, they all committed suicide within a year. Twenty years later, the boys who once had a crush on them try to make sense of their deaths.

This book sounded really promising. But I had problems to connect with the story and the narrators. The novel is written from a first plural perspective. Since the boys didn’t have contact with the sisters regularly, their memories are based on rumors and on minor details. Th

i loved how the story unfolded yet i felt rejected by how quickly and abruptly it ended. I wish the author had written 10 more pages. None the less a good read.
