Loved, loved, loved, loved, loved this book. That's 5 stars for 5 loves. These characters seemed so real to me...I swear I know them. I listened to the audio version which was superbly narrated by Kathleen Wilhoite. There were moments of hilarity combined with moments of pathos but most of all you will recognize these people as your neighbors and friends. Cute, light read. Good book to read while traveling as it is entertaining but does not require concentration. Made me laugh...like an episode of Portlandia.

This was a fun book as a break from more serious books. Maria Semple writes about upper class Seattle with humor and sarcasm in this story about an architect who has developed a form of agoraphobia. She disappears and through a series of emails and articles, her 16 year old daughter describes her story. I read it quickly and enjoyed it completely.

Fun, quick read. I broke my rule about reading new books because the first few pages sucked me in. I would recommend this for anyone who has dealt with friends or family with mental illness, although it might make light of it, it is also real in certain ways.

I'm going to pass this along to some friends for other opinions. For me, the tale was too much of a farce and too much of the narrative was in the form of electronic communication (emails & such). I finished; it was worthy of that. Otherwise disappointing. ...more
