What Members Thought

I was just about to rate this book with a solid 4 stars. The audio had been recommended to me by my Canadian Friends from Literary Hoarders (thanks Penny and Jackie). Knowing nothing about the book when I started listening to it, I found it very entertaining and enjoyable. I love the US (this one took place in NYC) in the 1900-1950s. The characters were well drawn and the story was a strong period piece and for the most part not very predictable.

Katey is the center of the story, an unapologetic working girl. She's an ambitious and determined seeking success in the publishing industry. Her best friend, Eve, with a lot of spirit, refuses daddy's money and embraces her free spirit.
Eve and Katey meet Tinker Grey on New Year's Eve, 1937, at a jazz bar in Greenwich Village. Tinker's a ruggedly handsome man with an enigmatic mystique. The three become fast friends, but as with many triangulating relationships, a hairline rivalry sets in. Then ...more

I give this one a 3 and 1/2. I really wish we had that to use for rating. Liked this one. Yet, at times wondered how I could even relate to the way the characters thought about their lives, the way they moved in and out of finding and losing people. Yet, there was a mystery here which kept me reading.

Great writing, but the story and characters did not pull me in. Set in NYC in the 1930's Towles does a good job of creating this place and period.

This book is beautifully written and the story line was right up my alley but this book just wasn’t as perfect for me as I expected. Since I appreciated the author’s writing style I did finish and am glad that I did. I DNF the author’s a Gentleman in Moscow. I appreciates the writing but maybe this author’s books are just not for me.
