If you are looking for escapist beach time reading, this is a great choice. The story takes place in Brazilian jungle, and I give Patchett kudos for creating atmosphere. I felt transported to the Amazon every time I cracked open a page. The plot is thin and requires a large degree of suspension of disbelief. Throughout I kept wondering how all those incredible plot points would be tied up. I could see no reasonable way out for the author, and neither could she, because they stay loose ends, unti ...more

Aarrgghh!! What happened to the ending??? Is there going to be a sequel?

I was supposed to read this for my book club this past August. Instead, I was reading The Devil and the White City for my bike trip around Lake Michigan which ended with a week touring Chicago. The Devil and the White City is a perfect book for a trip to the Windy City as I am sure that State of Wonder would be a great read for a trip down the Amazon - hmmm, can you ride the circumference of the Amazon by bike?

I did not find "State of Wonder" to be as compelling a story as "Bel Canto." It seemed to kind of plod along slowly as the main character, Marina, ventured into the Amazon to discover what happened to her colleague and friend. However the ending was well done and quite a surprise to me. Plus the book left me wondering..... Thus I think it merits 4 stars. ...more

Great character development and story line. I loved Bel Canto and this book was also wonderful leading me to ask, why I haven't read more by Ann Patchett? Definitely recommend! ...more

A very strange tale to be sure, with equal parts fantasy and science fiction and modern novel. I had a difficult time feeling close to the characters for some reason--there was a distance there, in the way in which Patchett wrote about them. I almost felt as though I were reading a documentary about them. The ending, too, seemed to tie things up ubruptly, and left me feeling unsettled. Not my favorite of her works.
