What Members Thought

I'm a huge fan of Laura Lippman's stand-alone novels. She's particularly good at three things: 1) Telling a really, really good story; 2) Creating characters that are so believable they practically breathe on the pages; and 3) Incorporating pop culture and current events into the narrative in really original, interesting, and poignant ways. She's really at her best in this novel.

This is the story of Eliza Benedict, a 38-year-old married mother of 2 who receives a letter from Walter Bowman, the man who kidnapped her the summer she was 15 and is now on death row. The narrative shifts between the present and the summer, when Eliza involuntarily became a part of Walter's endless road trip, including the fateful night when he picked up another teenage girl, Holly. Soon after Walter killed Holly, Eliza was rescued and taken home.

Disappointing story. Flat characters. Eliza makes choices that no credible woman would make. I forced myself to finish the book because I spent $15 on it, but I kept thinking about all the other books I could be reading instead that are probably so much better than this one. It also seemed that the author had an anti-death penalty adgenda here; if so, it didn't change my mind one bi

I enjoyed this book and it was a quick read. The characters were interesting though not all of them completely rang true. I had trouble understanding the one advocate that was trying to help the prisoner; she seemed a bit creepy. The husband seemed a little too good to be true. Other than that, it was interesting.
