This was a wonderful book and I liked how all the individual stories ultimately came together at the end. One of my favorite characters was the young, "present day" Alma, and of course I really liked Leopoldo Gursky. I loved how the book went back and forth between the characters' perspectives and how it went back and forth between past and present. This "technique" works well for me because I feel like I end up knowing more about each character that way.

The History of Love is a novel within a novel. Generally speaking, the characters all suffer from some sort of loss/grief but, refreshingly, there is no resolution of their experiences. Often, authors focus on wrapping up their literary package with a nice, pretty bow. Not the case with The History of Love.
Krauss briefly alludes to the Holocaust but it is not the main theme and in no way takes away from the story.

LOVED this book the first time around (especially the ending). Reading it again for a book group, and loving it again. Very sad for me, though.
Yep, loved it again. There's some ambiguity about what the truth is here, and if all of the characters are real (in the book). Unreliable narrators. I'm not sure what the truth is, but I did love the characters and the dedication to the idea of love (as well as to individual people).
