I really enjoyed this book, however I'm only giving it 4 stars because the ending (which I will not mention) was a little over the top compared to the rest of the book. I did however love the Major's dry humor and overall thought it was a very clever book. ...more

Loved this gentle story of a retired army major trying to age gracefully in modern England.

This was a very charming book. I thoroughly enjoyed the cast of characters, the hilarious scenes so well written I was laughing my way through the book. Smart, genuine people make up this fun, witty, entertaining story. Would love to sip tea with the Major as I admired the way he handled life, and his son in particular!

A sweet book set in a small English village. The main characters find love in their twilight years, complicated by race and class issues.
Would highly recommend!!!

What a wonderful book. Major Pettigrew is initially seen as a lonely old man with nothing much left in life (though he is not actually so old as all that).... then his character unfolds along with events and the small English community in which he lives. Lots of great characters. The book is humorous, charming and meaningful. John Mortimer meets Jane Austen. I'll be reading Simonson's next novel... whatever that may be. ...more

I really enjoyed this book, fun to read (found myself laughing outloud). Nice mix of old fashioned and modern.
