I loved the use of Highgate Cemetery in the novel. Like all great settings, it becomes a character in itself. Her Fearful Symmetry is an excellent ghost story with the interplay of love/hate relationships. I realize with death as a major element in the novel, it is bound to be on the dark side. However, it tended to be overwhelmingly depressing at times. I found that Martin, even with his OCD, is the most uplifting character in the book. He seems to be able to hold onto life's true essence, hope

I rate this book a 4.5- this is the 2nd novel by this author. her first (Time Traveler's Wife) was a book I couldn't put down. While I enjoyed this one a lot for me it didn't have the same 'can't wait to find out what happens next' factor.
It is a mixture of a story about the lives of the characters and a ghost story. It is set near Highgate Cemetery in London - the description of London was evocative. The relationships between the characters and the characters themselves are written very well an ...more

Critics didn't express high hopes for Niffenegger's second novel -- a ghost story, mystery, and love story combined into one. Nonetheless, comparisons to the acclaimed Time Traveler's Wife prevailed. Certain similarities exist, including themes of the elusive nature of love, loss, obsession, and time. However, that's where the likenesses end. While a few reviewers cited the characters in Her Fearful Symmetry as compassionate, if self-absorbed, creations, others called them emotionally distant an

Most of this book was an enthralling story of twin sisters who move to England because they inherit their mother's twin's estate. The writing was good and so was the story until close to the end. One does need to suspend earthly belief for much of the book, but the end got too weird to me. It was a solid 4-star until then.

I'm one of the few people that did not like The Time Traveler's Wife. In fact, I would even go so far as to say I actively disliked it. However, I was intrigued by the premise of Her Fearful Symmetry, so I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. I was immediately entranced by the story and found that even though it was slow-moving at times, I had to know what happened next. Many reviewers complained about the improbability of certain things that happened in the book, but I didn't have any p

I really enjoyed this book in a completely different way than I did The Time Traveler's Wife (which continues to be an all time fav). It is about as completely different from TTTW than it could be. However, I thought it was wonderful. I really tried to read it as its own novel, with little thought about the fact that the same author wrote TTTW. That really helped me to keep them separate in my mind.

Amid the promotion for the release of the movie adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's The Time-Traveler's Wife (briefly reviewed last September) a number of us garnered advance copies of her new novel. Her Fearful Symmetry goes on sale in the US September 29 and revolves around two pairs of twins, the nature of existence, and a ghost story. That's all I can really add to the plot beyond the blurb, which you can read on any product page, before I start giving too much away; HFS differs greatly from

Her Fearful Symmetry took my breath away.
From the first page, I was drawn into Audrey Niffenegger's new novel and could not put it down.
The main storyline is that of "the twins" Valentina and Julia, Americans and mirror-image twins, who come to London to live in a flat that was bequeathed to them by an aunt they had never met. Their aunt, Elspeth, left them the flat with a few conditions, the first of which that they are to live in the flat together for one year. Elsepth is also the identical tw ...more

I did not like this book. The twins were two of the most uninteresting characters - why would any of the characters in the book want to spend time with them - let alone a reader. I did enjoy Martin and the cemetery and Jessica. But the twins (both sets) and the eventual plot, just drove me wild with frustration. I give it two stars because I did fnish it - wanted to finish it - wanted to find out "what happened in the end." It was just so disappointing when I finally reached the end.
